Citizens of most countries require a Visa to enter Tanzania. This can be easily obtained on arrival at the country’s international airports (Kilimanjaro International Airport, Julius Nyerere International Airport and Kisuani International Airport). It is essential that you have a clean and recent US dollar bills to pay for the Visa. Bills that are damaged with tears and holes, or bills dated prior to 2006, may be rejected by customs. In Tanzania, tourist visas may be issued as single or multiple entry permits and are valid for a maximum period of three or six months respectively. As with short-term visit visas in many destinations, these time limits are the maximum period for visas may be granted but do not necessarily reflect the grant that will be issued.

Serengeti NP:

Serengeti National Park, in northern Tanzania, is known for its massive annual migration of wildebeest and zebra. Others veer northeast to the Lobo Hills, home to black eagles. Arusha National Park covers Mount Meru, a prominent volcano with an elevation of 4566 m, in the Arusha Region of north eastern Tanzania. The park is small but varied with spectacular landscapes in three distinct areas. In the west, the Meru Crater funnels the Jekukumia River; the peak of Mount Meru lies on its rim. Ngurdoto Crater in the south-east is grassland. The shallow alkaline Momella Lakes in the north-east have varying algal colours and are known for their wading birds. Despite it’s small area of 137Km², it offers plenty of wildlife game.

Tarangire NP:

The Tarangire National Park is the 6th largest park in Tanzania and is extremely famous for its diverse landscape and nine different vegetation zones. The highlight of the vegetation is the ancient and gigantic Baobab trees, which make even animals like the giraffe look tiny. The 3,000 Sq Kms park gets its name from the Tarangire river that flows through it. The river attracts a lot of diverse animals and you should be able to spot a lot of elephants, giraffe, lions, antelopes and zebra. If it’s your lucky day, you might be able to spot the tree climbing python and the long necked Gerek. The Tarangire National Park has the highest concentration of elephants, which offers a unique chance for you to observe interactions between elephant families.

This national park is one of Africa’s smaller and underrated parks. Lake Manyara National Park is a Tanzanian national park located both in Arusha Region and Manyara Region, Tanzania. The closest airport to this park is the Dar es Salaam airport, from which you can reach the park by rail or road.

The Mikumi National Park is the next best park in the southern region which offers wildlife game throughout the year. Established in 1964, it covers an area of 3,230 km² and is the fourth largest in the country. The landscape of Mikumi is often compared to that of the Serengeti. The diverse wildlife in this park includes elephants, zebras, impala, eland, kudu, black antelope, baboons, wildebeests, buffaloes and lions. The park is extremely accessible from Dar es Salaam by a surfaced road.

The official local currency in Tanzania is the Tanzanian Shilling. However, US dollars are accepted almost everywhere for and are even the preferred currency for transactions over 100USD. Just as in the case of obtaining your visa, currency bills that are dated post 2006 in an undamaged condition are recommended.

Visa and Mastercard facilities are in their infancy and will only be available at high-end stores and hotels. Expect for the commission to be added to your bill. You can also use Visa and Mastercard in many ATMs. However, Tanzanian ATMs only dispense Tanzanian shillings and $300 equals a wad that barely fits in your pocket. It’s also possible to purchase US dollars with a credit card, but expect a fee of 4 to 5%.
