Roopkund trek is the one of the treks that lets you experience everything the Himalayas has to offer. Snow capped mountain peaks, miles of lush green meadows, serene lakes, dense virgin forests, folklore, beautiful campsites and to top it all, it has the most intriguing history of all the trekking destinations in the Himalayas.

Roopkund is a high altitude lake, lying in the Garhwal Himalayas in Chamoli district, Uttarakhand in Nanda Devi Biosphere reserve. Situated at an altitude of about 16500 feet,, the lake remains frozen for most part of the year. Roopkund is also called the 'Skeletal Lake', on account of the several hundreds of human skeletons and remians of horses found in and around the lake. A popular theory suggests these skeletons are from over 1100 years old when a large number of people on their way to the Nanda Devi shrine perished here in a hailstorm

The trek to Roopkund lake begins from a village called Loharjung situated at an altitude of 3200 meters and after trekking for 5 days you will reach Roopkund lake. The first 2 days will take you through some old traditional villages, crystal clear streams and raging rivers. A little bit further and you cross the tree line and enter into Bugyals - local word for lush green meadows. The Bugyals are spread for several miles, being dotted with small lakes in between at random intervals. Upwards of Bugyals, the air keeps getting thinner and the trek feels harder. Towards the end of trek, at an altitude of about 5000 meters lies the serene and mysterious Roopkund lake!
