The route you are referring to is called "Green route". This is the stretch of railway track between Donigal and Kukke Subramanya. It used to be a meter guage track and was left unused for many many years and had turned into a fantastic trekking route. Unfortunately the "abandoned" railway track isnt abandoned anymore. The train from Mangalore to Mysore passes through this route as the track has been converted to broad guage. Trekking is currently not allowed on this stretch.
Hiking or trekking in high altitudes can present different issues. Blood meters won't work properly and you would have to eat more. I would consult a physician before I leave
