The 'Bailey Trail' Trek by Greener Pastures.


This trek traces the historic route taken by Lt. Col. F M Bailey and Capt. H T Morshed, British officers who were commissioned to survey the lands between Arunachal Pradesh and Tibet during 1911-12. The trek was initially an ancient trade route that connected Burma, India and Tibet. The ‘Bailey Trail’ as it is known now, crosses through some pristine remote forests of the Eastern Himalayas, where pine, oak and rhododendrons grow aplenty. Throughout the trek, the presence of breathtaking landscapes will overwhelm you, and at times, you’ll be able to see the majestic peaks of Gorichen and Kangto, two of northeastern India’s highest peaks. The highest point of this trek will be Sela Pass at a height of 4550 meters. Entirely, you’ll crossing high mountain passes, glacial rivers, crystal clear lakes, villages of the Monpa Tribe, and will be staying at campsites that will awe you. And as a bonus, you'll be visiting the Buddhist hill station of Tawang where the second oldest Buddhist monastery of the world is mafnificently located.

  • Day 1

    Start early morning in a drive of 370 kms from Guwhati to Dirang-Dzong at an altitude of 1550meters. Visit Tipi-research en-route to witness various endangered species of wild orchids along with hundreds others. Stay overnight at a clean and comfortable hotel.

  • Day 2

    Start early and drive to a Monpa Tribe village of Namshu at 2090 meters. Visit ancient Bunddhust monastery and start trekking through forests in a 4 hour steep climb to Chander Village and camp overnight.

  • Day 3

    Climb up for about 5 hours through forests and yak pastures with superb views of snow-clad peaks and the surrounding valleys. Camp overnight at Thingri.

  • Day 4

    A day of hard trek with about 6 hours of steep climb through coniferous forests. The landscape will offer breathtaking views of the eastern Himalayas. Climb till just below Changla for overnight stay in tents.

  • Day 5

    You’ll start climbing early, crossing Changla Pass (3650 meters) where you can see breathtaking views of the eastern Himalayas. Then a steep climb to Poshing la Pass (3950 meters). From the pass, you’ll descend through forests of Juniper and Rhododendrons and cross a glacial stream before continuing your climb of another 4 hours to the alpine pastures of Potak (4200 meters) to camp at a beautiful spot near a stream.

  • Day 6

    Climb steadily for another 4 hours to reach Sela Pass (4550 meters), the highest point of this trek with majestic views of the Gorichen and Kangto peaks. Visit to alpine lake near the pass and then descend for about 2 hours into the valley and camp at Lorthum.

  • Day 7

    6 hour trek along the river valley through coniferous forests, crossing Yak huts along the way to reach a tributary of Tawang-chu river and camp overnight near Mago Village (3500 meters).

  • Day 8

    4 hours trek along the Tawang-chu River and then a steep climb to Thimbu village (4200 meters). Overnight at campsite in Thimbu.

  • Day 9

    Today will be a long 6 hours of trekking through forests, crossing the Tawang-chu River and its tributaries several times over log and suspension bridges to reach the highway. Drive to Tawang for overnight stay in a clean 3 star hotel.

  • Day 10

    Spend the day sightseeing around the town of Tawang. Visit the famous Tawang Monastery located at the top of a hill and overlooking the entire landscape. The monastery is the second oldest in Tibetan Buddhism and is a center for enlightened studies. Evening can be spent exploring the market area fo Tawang and indulging in a little souvenir shopping. Overnight at hotel.

  • Day 11

    After breakfast, drive to Bomdila (6 hours) for overnight stay in 3 star hotel. Rest of the day will be free to explore around town and visit the markets.

  • Day 12

    Drive to Guwahati (10-12 hours) in Assam for overnight stay in a 3 star standard hotel.

  • Day 13

    Drive to Guwahati Airport (1 hour) for a flight back home. Tour Ends.
