The trek begins from the town of Manali. The trail continues through the orchards and the alpine forests of the valley and ascends to a height of 4270 metres at Hamta Pass. One can get a close view of Deo Tibba and Indrasan peaks from here. Continuing along the grassy slopes, and along the Chandra river, one reaches Batal at the foot of Kunzum Pass. This pass provides the main approach to Spiti from Lahoul. The Chandertal Lake is hidden between the lower ridge and the main Kunzum range. Situated at an altitude of 4270 m, it is a crescent shaped lake with a circumference of 2.5 km. It is set on a large meadow and provides a spectacle of peace and serenity amid the views of Mulkila mountain range and Samudra Tapu Glacier. The trek can be continued to Tokpoyongma. Crossing the river and a steady ascent brings us to the Baralacha-La at an altitude of 4833 m. The Pass is the confluence of roads from Manali, Lahaul, and Ladakh. The journey is a series of ups and downs, crossing the high altitude passes and meandering in the valleys. Culturally Chandertal is the gateway to the unique traditions of Buddhism followed by the people at the remote and largely unexplored Lahaul and Spiti valley. It is the source of the Chandra river and according to legend, it is believed that Yama took Yudhishthira to heaven through this path.
