Trekking at Dzongri, Sikkim By Lamdik Eco Ventures
Sikkim, the small but beautiful kingdom is situated in the eastern Himalayas. Sikkim is termed as the Switzerland of the east, a heavenly paradise on earth. It covers an area of 2818 square miles 7325 square kilometers. It is rectangular in shape with seventy miles in the north to south and forty east to west. Geographically it is 28 Degree 07' 48'' degree and 27 degree 04' 46'' north latitude, and 88 degree 00' 58' and 88 degree 55' 25'' east longitude. In the north it is bounded by Tibetan plateau to its east is Bhutan and Chumbi valley of Tibet and in the southern side is bounded by West Bengal India. There are two passes in the eastern boundary with Tibet Nathula pass (4700 metres) and Jelepla(4016 metres ). To the west lies Singalila range which forms the most important boundaries between Nepal and Sikkim with a pass named Chiwabhangjang (3400 metres). There are two important rivers In Sikkim Teesta which starts from Tashidrag Glacier in the north and Rangit which is a tributaries of Teesta river.
YUKSAM- TSHOKA (3050Mts 06 hrs trek)
Our first day takes us to Tshoka walking at last, a gentle rising trail through rain forest, until a final steep couple of hours will bring us to the small settlement of Tibetan village and small Tibetan Monastery. Overnight camp /Hut.
TSHOKA –DZONGRI (4100Mts 06 hrs trek) over night camp /hut.
A gentle rising traverse through forest and them a more exposed hillside brings us to the prayer flags adorning our first pass and views of distant mountains. Through the day we contour, climb maintaining a steady height, spiraling from one side of the ridge to the other until a rough steep ascent takes us across a pass. Beyond the trail wends its way steady through rhododendrons, juniper.
Early morning we air for view point (Dzongri view point) with the optional of seeing the sunrise from the near by prayer flagged hillside where the king of Sikkim used to come to pay his respect to the holy mountains. In the clear weather the views here are excellent.
DZONGRI – TSHOKA (3050mts 05 hrs)
We set of climb steadily to another ridge(4250Mts)passing herds of yak among scrub juniper and Rhododendrons, which are mixed and burnt as incense by the local, Hindus and Buddhist. The trail then drops down through seas of rhododendrons.Overnight Hut.
TSHOKA – YUKSAM (1770 Mts. 06 hrs trek)
We follow the traditional route back to the main valley and then on to old capital Yuksam (Meeting place of three lamas)
