Trekking at Indhara Pass & Kareri Lake by Ravers Expeditions.

Located high between the ranges of Dhauladhar is the perfect elliptical glacial lake – Kareri Dal. While majority of the backpackers are seen flocking to Triund or Indrahar Pass circuit, this short trek to Kareri Lake makes for a richer and quieter experience.

Location: Kangra valley, Himachal Pradesh

Altitude : Indrahar Pass (4420m)

GRADE: Moderate (with a long Pass day)

During summer, the pasture lands are rich, with green nutritious grass and an array of wild flowers. The local village of Kareri sits snug below, against the backdrop of the mighty Dhauladhar ridge. There are a few vantage points in between, from where one can see several local settlements. Those who have a day to spare can spend a night at Kareri Village to experience quiet village life. There is a forest rest house just above the village that offers great views of the valley. The trek from here is an all ascending trail through holly oak and spruce forests. There is an easy glacial crossing over the stream running down from Kareri Lake during early summer. As you reach the secluded meadows of Harote, Kareri Lake is another 4 km trek up the narrow valley along the stream. Once at the lake side, you are at the base of Minkiani (Mankiani) and Bleni Passes. There is a lot one can explore from this campsite if time permits. Overall, this is an ideal Himalayan trek that can be wrapped up over a weekend.

This bustling Tibetan Buddhist town is home to His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama and his Tibetan government in exile. We visit monasteries and museums here and roam around in the Tibetan market on the day we reach McLeodganj. Indrahar Pass & Kareri lake The first stage of the trek will take you to the beautiful high altitude Kareri Lake through the enchanting Kareri village. This is not a very demanding stage and one gets to walk through enchanting forest sections and beautiful villages. We will camp next to the lake which is quite an experience. From here we start hiking towards the 4420m high Indrahar pass. This stage will require a lot of climbing up on steep slopes but nothing very drastic. The day we scale the pass one will need to put in a lot of hard work, climbing up through sections of scree and boulders. This effort is going to be suitably rewarded with fine views all around. During the end-May to mid-June period there is going to be snow on the trail and we will plan our hike keeping the conditions in mind. After having done the pass we start climbing down to McLeodganj. This is a great trek for beginners as well as experienced trekkers and has a variety of elements in it which make it a very interesting option for both. Set in the beautiful and unique Kangra valley, it is filled to the brim with hiking pleasures. On this trail one gets fabulous views of the Dhauladhar range. We get to visit sacred lakes, ancient temples and quaint Hindu villages hidden inside the valleys and waiting to be explored.
