This is a Trans-Himalayan trek in the heart of Kumaon Himalayas (Uttarakhand). At 2290m Munsiyari is on the arterial water body of the Gori Ganga, which emerges from the Milam Glacier in of the Eastern flanks of the Nanda Devi sanctuary.



Description

Water from the Kalaband Glacier and Panchachuli from the east also flows into the Gori Ganga. Subsidiary glaciers coming off the peaks of Mangraon (7542m), Deo Damla (7,602m) and Sakram (7,182m) also join the Milam glacier.

This trek starts at Munsiyari (2290m). Munsyari is a small beautiful hamlet with a scenic array of waterfalls and home to the Johari Tribe who are famed for their Ayurveda medicines and woolen shawls. Breathtaking views of the Panchchuli can be seen form here and Munsyari is the base for trekkers to Milam, Namik, Ralam glaciers and the Nanda Devi Peak.

The views from Milam Glacier of Trishuli, Hardeol and Rishi Pahar are a sight to behold. The whole trip is dotted with many such sightseeings, but one of the best highlights remain the beautiful meadows at the Nanda Devi Base camp that would delight one and all. If luck is favoring you on this trip you might even sight the elusive Snow Leopard or the Himalayan Musk Deer.

Note:-This is an Inner Line Permit Trek, so we need to apply the permit for this trek.


Itinerary

  • Day one

    Drive Kathgodam – Almora – Munsyari (300kms. drive) 8-9 hrs**

    Upon arrival at Kathgodam drive to Munsyari via Almora. On arrival check in to hotel for overnight stay.

  • Day two

    Paper Work Day**

    Most part of the day is spent today in getting some paper work ready to get necessary permits from the local administration. The evenings however are free for you to see around the very beautiful village.

  • Day three

    Munsyari – Lilam**

    From Munsyari, a 10 km drive will take you to Selapani from where we begin our trail up the hill. This easy 7km walk will take only 2 ½ hours and you will find yourself in Lilam in good time to halt at the tiny rest house for the night.

  • Day four

    Trek Lilam – Bugdiar (2700 mts, 12 kms,5-6 hrs)**

    In the morning we will trek up to Bugdiar. Enroute we will cross the thick forest of bamboos and mixed rain forest. After a upward trek we will reach Bugdiar. Here we can see Shepherds with their flocks of sheep and goats are a common sight at the meadows of Bugdiar. On arrival set up campsite. Dinner and overnight stay in tents.

  • Day five

    Trek Bugdiar- Martoli (3430 mts, 14 kms, 5-6 hrs)**

    We continue trekking along the Gori Ganga through series of narrow gorges. This beautiful trail passes through gorges and meadows leading to Railkot. The trek continues to the village Martoli situated at the edge of Lwan Gad Valley. Overnight stay in tents.

  • Day six

    Trek Martoli – Milam (3456 mts, 11kms, 5-6 hrs)**

    We descend to a bridge over the Lwan Gad and continuing further we cross the bridge over the Gori Ganga. The trail goes on to the left bank and a short climb brings us to Burphu Village (3350 m). The valley opens up here and one get a spectacular view of several peaks of the Great Himalayas. Trekking further we will reach the village Milam. Overnight stay in tents.

  • Day seven

    Trek Milam – Milam Glacier – Milam (6 kms, 3-4 hrs)**

    After breakfast trek towards the Milam Glacier. On arrival explore the glacier; one can view the magnificent peaks of Rishi Parvat (6692 m), Hardeol (7151 m) and Trishuli I (7074 m). Later trek back to Milam for dinner and overnight stay.

  • Day eight

    Milam**

    The day is relax/exploration. Dinner and overnight stay in tents.

  • Day nine

    Trek Milam – Lwani (13 kms, 5-6 hrs)**

    After breakfast trek down to Lwani. On arrival set out camp for dinner and overnight stay.

  • Day ten

    Trek Lwani – Nanda Devi East Base Camp (4150 mts, 13kms, 5-6 hrs)**

    In the morning we will start our trek to base of Nanda Devi East. The route is full of thrill and we will pass a series of moraine fields and famous meadows of Sartol Kharak (3650 m) and Naspanpatti (3850 m) in Nanda Devi Sanctuary. Set out camp for dinner and overnight stay.

  • Day eleven

    Explore the Valley of Nanda Devi East Base Camp.

  • Day twelve

    Nanda Devi East Base Camp – Martoli (3430 mts, 14 kms, 5-6 hrs)

    After an early breakfast trek to Martoli. Dinner and overnight stay in tents.

  • Day thirteen

    Martoli – Bugdiar (2500 mts,13 kms, 4-5 hrs)**

    In the morning after breakfast trek down to Bugdiar via Railkot. Dinner and overnight stay in tents.

  • Day fourteen

    Trek Bugdiar – Lilam (12 kms, 4 hrs)**

    Trek down to Lilam. Dinner and overnight stay in tents.

  • Day fifteen

    Trek Lilam – Munsyari (2290m)**

    This is our last day trek to Munsyari. This is another easy day to reach Munsyari. Dinner and overnight stay in hotel.

  • Day sixteen

    Drive Munsyari – Almora (6 hrs).**

    Drive back from Munsyari to Almora. Overnight in Hotel in Almora.

  • Day seventeen

    Drive Almora to Rishikesh.**

    Drive to Rishikesh takes about 10 hours. Trip finishes upon arrival in Rishikesh.
